VDC: Smarter Mechanical Construction from Day One

In today’s fast-paced construction environment, efficiency, collaboration, and accountability are more important than ever. Traditional project delivery methods often separate design and construction — which can lead to delays, miscommunication, and unexpected costs. The Design-Build approach offers a better way forward, combining expertise and execution under one contract and one unified vision.

What Is VDC?

VDC is a process that uses intelligent 3D modeling to create a digital representation of a building’s systems. Unlike traditional drawings, VDC models include real-world dimensions, relationships, and data that help teams visualize how a project will come together long before installation begins.

For mechanical contractors, VDC helps ensure systems like HVAC, piping, and mechanical room layouts are coordinated and constructible before crews ever step on site.

Why VDC Matters for Mechanical Projects

1. Better Coordination Across Trades

Mechanical systems don’t exist in a vacuum—they share space with structural, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and architectural components. VDC allows all trades to work from a coordinated model, reducing the risk of conflicts in tight areas like ceilings, shafts, and equipment rooms.

This means fewer change orders, fewer delays, and smoother installation.

2. Clash Detection Prevents Costly Field Rework

One of VDC’s biggest advantages is clash detection—identifying conflicts between systems before materials are installed.

Instead of discovering a duct run colliding with a beam after it’s already hung, VDC catches these issues early, saving time, reducing wase and keeping projects moving forward.

3. Improved Prefabrication and Planning

With VDC, mechanical systems can be designed and verified with greater accuracy, enabling more opportunities for prefabrication.
Prefabrication helps:
• Improve quality and consistency
• Reduce on-site labor hours
• Increase jobsite safety
• Minimize material waste
• Speed up installation timelines
When the model is right, fabrication and field execution become faster and more predictable.

4. More Accurate Quantities and Material Tracking

VDC supports smarter planning by providing accurate material quantities and layouts. This helps with estimating, ordering, and logistics—reducing last-minute scrambling and preventing over-ordering.

The result is a more efficient workflow from procurement through installation.

5. Clear Communication for Everyone Involved

VDC improves communication not just between trades, but also with owners, architects, and general contractors. A 3D model makes it easier to understand system routing, access clearances, and equipment placement—especially for complex mechanical rooms and congested spaces.

It’s a powerful way to align expectations early and avoid confusion later.

VDC Creates Better Outcomes for Owners Too

The benefits of VDC don’t stop once construction is complete. VDC can also support long-term building performance by improving documentation and system understanding for facility teams.
Owners benefit from:
• Cleaner handoff documentation
• Better visibility into mechanical layouts
• Easier future maintenance planning
• Reduced lifecycle surprises

TERMS

Associated Mechanical appreciates your continued business and support.

To help offset rising payment processing costs, we will be implementing a credit card processing surcharge on all invoices paid by credit card, effective April 22, 2026.

A surcharge of 3.5% will be applied to the total invoice amount when payment is made by credit card. This fee reflects the actual cost charged to us by our payment processor. In compliance with Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. § 325G.051), you will be notified of this surcharge verbally at the time of each transaction, and notice is also posted at our place of business.

To avoid this surcharge, you are welcome to pay by ACH transfer, check, or cash, which will remain free of any additional charges.
Please note that this surcharge applies to credit card payments only and does not apply to debit card transactions. The surcharge is subject to applicable Minnesota sales and use tax.

If you have any questions or would like assistance setting up an alternative payment method, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership.
